Astraea: Type Design
Collaborative Digital & CNC Routed Wood Typeface
Astraea is a collaborative custom wood type display face. The typeface was created in a week by students from UMass Dartmouth, under typeface designer Mark Jamra and multidisciplinary designer Steve Bowden. Through the course of the workshop, students sketched, drew and refined characters to create a custom alphabet.
The final typeface was created via CNC machine in both rough plywood and end grain maple. Snap on serifs were created in reference to Matthew Carter’s Walker typeface, uniting an idea born digitally with the traditional technology of wood type.
